NYIGF Recognizes Exemplary Green Products with Two Initiatives

New York, NY – Two initiatives recognizing exemplary eco-friendly and socially-responsible products connected with the New York International Gift Fair® (NYIGF®) have been advanced for the winter 2013 edition, with designation of seven products as achieving NYIGF’s highest “Degrees of SustainAbility” status and announcement of 30 finalists eligible for online balloting in the semi-annual Eco Choice Awards.

“Both of these initiatives are extensions of NYIGF’s SustainAbility: design for a better world® project, which serves to promote and build awareness of sustainable, earth-friendly gift, home, and lifestyle resources,” said Christian Falkenberg, NYIGF director and GLM vice president. “The products that have been designated as exemplary raise the bar and set an example for others in the industry.”

Degrees of SustainAbility

Only seven of the 125+ products accepted for the winter 2013 SustainAbility: design for a better world exhibit have been designated as achieving NYIGF’s SustainAbility3, the top-ranking level for eco-friendly and socially-responsible products, production processes and business practices. NYIGF’s “Degrees of SustainAbility” initiative outlines industry-specific criteria for identification of green products and producers. A three-tiered rating – SustainAbility1 through SustainAbility3 –indicates the extent to which a product/producer complies with these standards. Ilene Shaw of Shaw+Co! curates the exhibit and designates each participant’s ranking.

The seven companies designated with the highest SustainAbility3 ranking this winter include: Anjolie Ayurveda for its 100% organic Spa Soaps; Equilibrium for its handmade Rectangle Free Form Mirror framed in recycled timber; Fab Habitat for its recycled plastic baskets handmade in India; Marina Paper Ltd for its Tsatsalung pouch made in Nepal with Daphne paper and giant nettle fibers; Potting Shed Creations, Ltd. for its Dawn Redwood Tree-to-Be™ growing kit; Seawicks Candle Company for its 100% soy candles in a reusable drinking glass; and Sobremesa by Greenheart for its utensils and cutting boards handmade from certified, non-fruiting coffee trees. These SustainAbility3 designated products will be identified by special signage in the display at NYIGF.
