Landing in Monmouth after moving around the country and the Pacific Rim through her husband’s 30-year career has confirmed for Petals & Vines owner Maggie Triplett and daughter Martha Zuck that having a home town is different from having a home.

While Triplett lists Louisville, Ky., as her hometown and Zuck identifies with Chicago, they have found fertile soil in which to plant their families and build a business with Petals & Vines, a flower and gift shop on Monmouth’s Main Street.

“I married a Salem man,” Triplett said, “but we moved around a lot after we were married.” Husband Dwight’s relatives later relocated from Salem to Monmouth.

She and Dwight moved regularly, from New York, Connecticut, Ohio and New Jersey, then to Taiwan, Korea and The Philippines through various corporate job changes. They then returned stateside and resumed their peregrinations through California, Chicago (where Martha attended high school and worked in a flower shop), Colorado and Maryland prior to retirement and Monmouth in 2006.

The flower and gift shop turned 1 year old in April, and Triplett has been checking on what’s been working best for her and her customers.
