Jean Stevenson Nail and Gift Shop celebrates silver anniversary
West Akron, OH — Twenty-five years in business has brought some changes to the Jean Stevenson Nail and Gift Shop, but not to her family of customers.
Shop owner Jean Stevenson opened her shop as a nail salon in 1984, with her first customer being Nancy Norris, of West Akron. Today, the business has grown to include a gift shop and tanning services. Even Norris’ daughter, Lisa Handal, of Richfield, frequents the shop.
Stevenson explained customers visiting her salon these days are requesting fewer artificial nails, which were once very popular, and asking for a buffed and more natural look. The shorter acrylic and silk nails are more popular with customers, as well as the paraffin manicures and pedicures.
Handal reported she is one of those customers who enjoys the paraffin treatment, which involves dipping the hand or foot into hot wax.
“If your hands or feet are dry, it works wonders,” she said. “It is also a nice way to relax.”
Manicures and pedicures, which are now more in demand, said Stevenson, offer customers a polished look not only for their hands but also for their feet, especially during the summer, she said. It is a great way to pamper yourself, according to Stevenson.
Stevenson added today’s customers include more men who need help taking care of their toenails.
“A pedicure is much cheaper than having to visit the doctor for a problem that develops from neglect,” she said.
