Tax-free shopping starts Sunday
Farmington, CT — With the struggling economy, the state’s annual week-long sales tax holiday has never been more welcome.
The back to school shopping frenzy is well underway at Westfarms Mall and every other mall across the state. Starting on Sunday and for seven days after that there will be a bargain from state government.
The sales tax exemption for clothing and shoes jumps from $50.00 – $300.00 starting Sunday.
Take a pair of sneakers priced at $49.99 for example. There wouldn’t be a Connecticut Sales Tax on those sneakers because they’re priced under $50.00. However, a pair of sneakers at priced at $59.99, has a $3.59 sales tax during the rest of the year. During ‘Tax Free Week,’ it’s zero.
It doesn’t matter how many things you buy. You could outfit a whole team, as long as each item is under $300.00 dollars there’s no tax.
Many people know all about it and plan shopping starting Sunday. “We do because of things being so expensive for him. We definitely take advantage of it,” said Rose Lugo of Waterbury.
“August is a very busy month for us anyway, but the third week of August is typically the busiest,” said the General Manager of Westfarms Mall, Kevin Keenan.
Remarkably, after nine years as a state law, many people still don’t know about the tax break.
“We will definitely take advantage of it,” said Dina Minniti of Madison. “I’m surprised actually, but we’ll definitely come back and make sure we can get jackets for the girls and things like that, maybe even things for myself.”
