Alicia Dorau knows there are a lot of gift shops in the Fremont area, but she thinks she can fill a certain niche missing from the scene.

When she opened The Unique Boutique June 1 with her mother, Becky Cady, she had a different plan than the common Fremont gift shop. She planned to use the store at 304 E. 22nd St. to sell women’s handbags.

“My mom and I started these purses we make called Glitzy Gals,” Dorau said. “So many people were asking if we had a store so we decided to.”

Prior to that, the women sold their purses at craft shows and purse parties.

“I started up a page on MySpace and it went great,” Dorau said. “(The purses) have gone all over — California, Boston, Colorado and Germany.”

The unique feature of the purses is the handles, because they are made of bungee chords.
