Foraging through Dutch Country LaneBy Patricia A. West-VollandZanesvilleTimesRecorder.com

Berlin – A soft tap, tap, tap greets visitors as they step into the workshop of the Wendell August Gift Shop & Forge at 7007 Dutch Country Lane.

Skilled craftsmen gently tap aluminum into shape using hand forging methods that have been passed down through the generations.

The Forge Workshop is open for complementary tours Tuesday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The facility is family friendly and craftsmen are happy to answer any questions about the seven-step process of creating a work of art from a sheet of aluminum.

“Wendell August Forge offers a unique shopping experience for anyone visiting,” said Melissa Kollar, store manager. “With our large showroom, free tours and one-of-a-kind hand made products, you will find the perfect souvenir or gift you are looking for.”

The 13,000-square-foot frame facility includes several different sections for visitors to explore. For shoppers, there is a 4,000 square-foot showroom filled with unique handcrafted metal giftware in aluminum, solid bronze, copper, fine pewter and sterling silver.

“We only work in solid metals; solid aluminum, bronze, copper, pewter, stainless steel and upon request sterling silver and gold. Nothing is plated,” Kollar said.
