You wouldn’t think that a stoplight could influence a critical business decision, but Sharon Clark will tell you it has.

Clark is moving her Pepperberries gift shop from the west to the east side of Main Street in Culpeper, in part because the traffic light at Main and Davis is costing her foot traffic.

“We did lose out on some tourist traffic because of that light,” said Clark, who plans to open at her new location on Valentine’s Day. “People didn’t want to spend five to 10 minutes waiting to cross the street.”

The new location’s front door is actually on Davis Street (105 East Davis) but it is directly across Main Street from the A.P. Hill Building, where Clark started her business in the summer of 2003.

Clark says she didn’t realize the influence of the Main Street traffic light until she opened a second gift shop–the Green Nest–on the south side of Davis Street.
