York Beach shop offers candles and collectiblesBy Rob LeveyYork Weekly

YORK — Open on weekends since the first weekend in May, Seashore Candles & Collectibles is much more than a candle or gift shop. For owner Diana Flynn, it is a path toward recovery and spiritual rejuvenation.

“My husband was a firefighter for many years in York Beach, but died last year from a heart attack,” Flynn said. “After my husband passed away, I wanted to do something that I enjoyed. I wanted to be my own boss and I love candles. It’s something I love doing …; Every holiday my husband would buy me candles and I loved them.”

For Flynn, opening up her candle shop is her way of re-introducing herself to the community, and although she has just begun her journey she has thoroughly prepared herself. Aside from jar scented candles, votives, floating candles, Christmas candles, tea lights and a variety of candle holders, she also offers one-of-a-kind, hand-carved candles, many of which she carved.

“I have Walt Disney themed hand-carved candles, some are Harley-Davidson, and I have moose-themed candles, firefighters, policemen,” said Flynn. “I have wedding candles and graduation candles that are absolutely beautiful.”

Pricing for these unique candles ranges from $17 to $35, depending on the size of the candle. What she does not have she can make herself for her customers or special order.
