La Crescent, WI – It’s been 30 years since Ellen and Jim Mades opened what today is Apple Valley Gifts, now at 329 Main St. in downtown La Crescent.

They opened Apple Valley Antiques and Gifts in September 1983 at another La Crescent location, after Ellen had been laid off in January of that year from her data processing job at Gateway Transportation in La Crosse. Ellen had worked at Gateway for 13 years.

“We liked antiques and going to auctions,” Mades said of the couple’s decision to go into the antiques and gifts business.
