Design Matters at Device in Laguna Beach

The owner and curator of CES contemporary, Carl E. Smith, is shaking things up in Laguna Beach with his next show, titled Device, opening Saturday, April 20th, 2013. Device is an objects show, bringing together several designers who are at the forefront of the contemporary movement in their respective disciplines. The featured work will transcend several genres of design, including fine art, industrial design, and jewelry design.

Co-founder of Cerno Bret Englander radiated excitement as he spoke about the significance of this show. “To see all the talent that will be housed under one roof at Device, one would typically have to be in New York, Paris or Milan,” said Englander. “I really want our local creative community to understand what a unique opportunity this is to have several of Cerno’s contemporaries whom we respect and admire right here in our home town.”

Nick Sheridan, co-founder of Cerno and Director of Design, exuded equal enthusiasm: “I am confident that the work will speak for itself and that design enthusiasts will appreciate the thought and process that is embodied in all the participating designers’ creations,” said Sheridan. “Cerno is honored to be part of such a progressive show and delighted that it happens to be in our back yard.”

Device will feature furniture and lighting from Bend, Brendan Ravenhill, Cerno, Matt Gagnon, Neil Buttermore, Pelle and Tanya Aguiniga. The jewelry exhibit will include the works of Laguna Beach native Sean Miller, and Simona Smith will introduce her new line, Stellar Edges, a collection of jewelry from her native Prague. The conceptual art will be a West Coast collective with works from Ben Venom, Peter Gronquist, Whitney Lynn, and Laguna Beach local Andrew Myers.

CES Contemporary is located at 480 Ocean Ave Laguna Beach, CA 92651 – ph. (949) 547-1716. Opening April 20th, 6-9 p.m.
