Museum makes room in gift shop
Queens, NY – In an effort to boost business for local artists, the Queens Museum of Art is clearing a space in its gift shop for Queens-made goods.
The Flushing museum is on the hunt for designers, jewelry makers and other artisans who live or work in the borough to feature in its museum shop starting in November.
“This was an opportunity to introduce the work of the artists working in Queens to the public and offer them a greater chance to be discovered,” said David Strauss, the museum’s director of external affairs.
The store currently sells World’s Fair memorabilia, T-shirts and tote bags inscribed with the word “Queens” in several languages, as well as a collection of books written about the borough. The idea of adding homemade artwork to the local-themed shop made perfect sense, Strauss said.
“It’s another opportunity to show how energized and creative the community in Queens is,” he said.
