Wauwatosa’s Fair Trade is a Retail Shop in the ‘Helping People’ Sector
Wauwatosa, WI – Allen Christian knows about working in a sweatshop.
“I saw those people,” said Christian, who worked a sweatshop office in his native Morocco. “I knew how much they got paid. I know how they struggle. I know how, when they try to start a union, they get intimidated and bullied and even assaulted. It was hard. Their lives were really miserable. They were just sinking into poverty more and more. It’s very unfair.”
This is part of the reason Christian and his wife, Gail Bennett, started Fair Trade For All, a retail shop with gifts, jewelry and clothing handmade by artisans in nearly 40 countries, including Egypt, India, Mexico, Tanzania and, primarily, Thailand.
