Willy’s Wiggly Web Spun Its Magic (Again) With Parent’s Choice Fall 2012 Awards

When children play a game together and not against each other, it’s known as cooperative play. Wonderful things can happen as kids learn to work together for a common obstacle. They share, make decisions together and perhaps, rescue bugs from a spider web! That’s the premise behind Peaceable Kingdom’s Willy’s Wiggly Web. Toy judges from the finicky Parents’ Choice Foundation were so bemused with snipping away at the sticky spider web that they awarded it a Parents’ Choice Foundation Fall 2012 Approved Award.

This is the third honor this fall that Willy’s Wiggly Web has spun. Oppenheim Toy Portfolio granted its Gold Best Toy Award to the clever cooperative game. And the National Parenting Publication Awards gave Willy and the bugs caught up in his web a 2012 Gold NAPPA distinction.

The Parents’ Choice review is quoted in full below where praise was given for the “subtle values” of this wacky coop game including teaching children to cut with (safety) scissors, recognize right from left and wait to take a turn.

Parents’ Choice Foundation Approved Award • Fall 2012 Games Category

This cooperative game has many subtle values. On the surface it challenges players to free ten little bugs from a big spider web in which they have been trapped. In the process, children learn to play together, count numbers, follow directions, differentiate between left and right, and obey rules. But what they liked best of all was learning to use scissors, as they snipped away, taking turns to release the bugs from the spider web.

The game is destined to last long, because it can be played in three ascending levels of difficulty, and comes with 50 stretchable paper webs.

Established in 1978, Parents’ Choice Foundation is the nation’s oldest nonprofit consumer guide to quality children’s media. Fewer than 20% of the products submitted to the Parents’ Choice Awards program receive any level of commendation. It’s an honor that doesn’t come easily! To win, they follow a few simple principles: children deserve material to sharpen young minds, not blunt them; children learn most easily when they enjoy it and learning is fun!
