First summer extracts at Javits exceeds expectations
WHITE PLAINS, NY … For nearly 100 exhibitors in EX·TRACTS: New discoveries in beauty and wellness, the first summer edition following its integration into the New York International Gift Fair (NYIGF) at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center proved to be a profitable success. During its five-day run, August 17-21, NYIGF attracted 36,000 trade attendees including some 6,000 spa, salon and specialty retailers.
“With the integration of EX·TRACTS into the NYIGF, buyers can source and shop a depth of personal care products alongside thousands of complementary lines, such as fashion accessories and bed, bath and linen merchandise,” said Melissa Engongoro, divisional manager. “This allows us to continue to draw a core audience of personal care retailers, while also attracting gift and home buyers interested in personal care products as a complement to their core merchandise.”
EX·TRACTS features a wide variety of personal care products, including cosmetics, perfumes, skincare, bath & body care, beauty accessories, hair care, apothecary gifts, natural and organic products and well-being lines. Participants include both established brands, such as theBalm, Voluspa, and Erbaviva, as well as innovative, emerging newcomers, such as Es’scents, HollyBeth’s Natural Beauty Products and Jaqua.
Many exhibitors credited the Javits location for increased visibility and order-writing by serious buyers. “The traffic has been good,” reported Cord Coen of Zents. “I have met with only quality buyers, many of whom are from international markets. The concentration of EX·TRACTS ensures that every buyer walking the aisle is looking for body care.” Gary Rosenberg of Sonoma Lavender reiterated this sentiment, stating “At many shows, fifty percent of the buyers you see are not the right ones – at NYIGF I see mostly serious buyers with a clean focus.”
Despite challenging economic conditions, many exhibitors reported strong sales during the market. “Monday was the best day we have had in the 13 years we have participated in this show. The orders just kept coming,” said Jimmy Belasco, founder of soy candle company Jimmy Belasco. “Because of this and the economy, I have cut out all shows except the NYIGF. All of the buyers that I’m looking for come here.”
Double-digit expansion of EX·TRACTS at the New York International Gift Fair will begin in January 2009, with a 30 percent increase in exhibit space planned at the Javits Center by the end of 2009. According to Engongoro,
“Growth will be accomplished both by the addition of innovative newcomers, as well as the relocation of personal care exhibitors currently located in other NYIGF divisions. Crabtree & Evelyn, Lollia, and Fruits and Passion are companies we expect to repositioned within EX·TRACTS next winter.”
aEX·TRACTS is held as part of the New York International Gift Fair, and runs concurrently with New York Home Textiles Market Week. The winter edition will run Sunday, January 25, through Thursday, January 29, 2009, at New York City’s Javits Center. Information and registration is available online at www.extractsny.com.
