Emmitsburg — Treasure of the Americas, a gift shop with a Central American theme, recently became the latest addition to the local business scene.

Business owner Maria Henry sponsors a Nicaraguan family who makes most of the items she carries.

“I will be selling unique things from Central America. I also hope to inspire local artisans to put their work up on display, to show their talents on a consignment basis. That is a good idea considering high unemployment.”

The shop carries handcrafted wooden religious artifacts, treasure boxes, sugar and salad bowls, napkin holders, Indian pottery, scarves, tiny wooden houses, hand-woven blankets, clay vase pottery, wooden rosaries, bracelets, necklaces, embroidered shirts for men and women, candles, casual Guayaberas and nativity sets.

Nothing comes close to the hand-woven hammock that can be found in the stores, Henry said.
