Can you envision yourself as the next great chocolatier or candy artist showing your skills on a Food Network challenge? Or maybe you’d just like to be able to decorate a cake for your child’s birthday or give a delicious gift you know will be truly appreciated.

Where do you start? A good place would be Penny’s Sweet Supplies at 4276 Beverly Hills Drive in Brunswick (that’s just off Pearl Road across from Mapleside). This 1,200-square-foot store is packed with all you’ll ever need to make life sweeter for yourself or someone else.

Penny Socha once decorated cakes and made candy from home and then worked at Mardi Gras in Strongsville for three years before it closed. She wanted to continue on her own and when her husband, Stan, read about a program at the Medina County Career Center aimed at people who were interested in business ownership, she signed up. She opened Penny’s Sweet Supplies 17 years ago.

“There is nothing like giving a gift that is homemade, fresh and one the recipient knows you took time to create,” Socha said. “More and more people are doing things for themselves. Perhaps it’s to save money in this tough economy, but it is a lot of fun, too.”
