New popcorn shop gets cracking
If you’re looking for a healthy, tasty snack, a new eatery on Verona’s west side has just the thing.
Kernel Sullivan’s Popcorn Shoppe and Cafe opened Jan. 13 in the former home of Moose Creek Deli, 600 W. Verona Ave.
As the name suggests, popcorn is the shop’s specialty, though the cafe also serves breakfast sandwiches and coffee in the morning and soups and sandwiches for lunch. It is also planning to “continue the history of the buffalo chicken sandwich” that was so popular before Moose Creek Deli closed last year, said owner John Sullivan.
“Apparently, there was quite a following for that sandwich,” said Sullivan, a Mount Horeb resident who runs the shop with his wife, Diana, along with part-time help from his three kids, ages 20, 19 and 15.
While the shop is new, the Sullivans have been popping corn for area residents for years at special events like soccer tournaments at Reddan Park, at outdoor concerts in Mount Horeb and Black Earth or at the annual Wisconsin Cow Chip Throw and Festival in Sauk Prairie.
