In 2008, former-librarian-turned-full-time-mom Tracy Oklander Anderson wanted to send a gift basket to a friend, but also wanted to keep that gift in line with her personal commitment to green living. After wading through the multitude of cellophane-wrapped, non-Earth-friendly and just plain uncool options out there, she launched Tread Light Gifts, an online marketplace filled with eco-friendly gifts that are also eco-chic.

Each gift on Tread Light must fall into one or more of the following categories: organic; recycled or sustainable; fair-trade; or manufactured by companies who give back, either to the Earth or to their communities.

“I’m really, really picky about what I bring on,” Oklander Anderson explains. “It can take me up to eight months to find just the right thing, because I want to take time to get to know the people who make it and make sure they’re doing what they say they’re doing.”
