Business spotlight: Kimberly Garner/ The Barn Bum Equestrian Gifts & Collectibles
Palo Cedro, CA – What prompted you to start your own business? Last November it came to my attention that there was a Western Store/Salon for sale in Palo Cedro. After years of working for equine veterinarians in the area, I got to know many friends with that same passion for horses that I had. Since I lived in Millville, this was the perfect location for me to strike out and take that chance of owning my own business.
What is your educational and career background? I’ve spent my career providing the accounting and managing the offices for other businesses. So I knew one day I could do this on my own, I just needed the perfect opportunity to come along. I attended college classes for business and accounting years ago, but continued educating myself through various night classes. I’ve read countless books on buying and selling businesses, how to run retail businesses and I’m also partners with my husband, Jimmy Garner, Jr. of Jim Garner Plastering, Inc., in Redding.
How much research did you do before starting your business? I knew there was not an equestrian gift shop like what I was wanting to provide in the north state. I spent some time visiting various feed and tack stores to ensure what I had in mind was not being done yet. I also spent months researching equestrian vendors that offered unique products that were made in the U.S.A.
What were the most helpful sources, including websites? I’ve read everything I could get my hands on and attended a workshop with the Small Business Development Center at Shasta College. Once I had my offer put together, I met with them to go over everything to make sure I was on the right track. Then I met with their marketing professional to go over my ideas. They were a great avenue for professional advice and at no cost.
