Glendale Kids’ Shop Sells Locally Made Crafts
Pink walls with brown polka dots adorn the walls of the whimsical children’s shop in downtown Glendale that’s filled with children’s merchandise made largely by local crafters.
Jamie Tasche, a 37-year-old mother of three, opened Polkadots & Pinwheels three months ago and said she uses local artists both to help the economy and to keep prices in her specialty shop low.
“I wanted to really try to help jump-start the economy,” Tasche said. “By keeping it as local as possible, every penny is going to stay here in the Valley instead of me sending out money all across the U.S.”
When shoppers buy from local merchants, $43 out of every $100 stays in the community, said Jim Mapstead, board chair of Local First Arizona, a non-profit advocate for local businesses.
