Freeport, IL – Candy Allen-Smith grew tired of working for a large corporation and decided to pursue self-employment. She “ran away” from Chicagoland and settled in Freeport, where her dad grew up.

“I wanted a quieter life It was about finding a place that was going to fit with my desire to slow down and have happiness.”

Her grandmother owned a candy shop in Beloit — hence her name. She wanted to follow in her grandmother’s footsteps and open a candy shop, but the building she bought at 23 W. Exchange St. had a chocolate shop nearby.
