Hardscrabble Gifts

Leanne Scanlon & Janet Scanlon, co-owners
www.hardscrabblegifts.com
Janet and Leanne Scanlon is the mother/daughter duo behind this southside shop just a few blocks away from where the Chicago White Sox play baseball. Leanne’s a graphic designer who always wanted to open up her own T-shirt shop, and when her mother retired from the Chicago Police Department, the timing was right to open a shop that they felt was lacking in their neighborhood.
Today, Hardscrabble is the only place in Chicago that offers locally made paintings, fair trade crafts, jewelry and decor while customers wait for their custom T-shirt to be made, says Leanne Scanlon. Why the name? Hardscrabble was the original name of Bridgeport, so they felt it would be fitting to use a throwback name.
