Local Goods: Arcata’s Star Attraction
Caravan of Dreams
Owner: Nancy Anderson
Nancy Anderson wanted a store that featured affordable locally made pieces with plenty of functional value. Thus, ten years ago, Caravan of Dreams was born.
“Because we are a small town,” Anderson says, “we understand the strong commitment to supporting our community. We’re all neighbors and are in it together.”
Customers generally seek out local products, and in the store these are not difficult to find. For example, there is kitchenware pottery from Humboldt artists Peggy Dickinson, Hoffman Designs and Cabernet Wear. The store also sells locally made jewelry and various carved redwood trees by artist Roy Davenport. Caravan of Dreams also stocks fairly traded products, “made from a human earning a living wage.”
Because of Anderson’s commitment to her neighbors, she knows that long-lasting relationships are essential to making sure local businesses thrive. All customers are treated fairly, greeted with a smile at the door and leave knowing they made a conscious effort at bettering their community.
