GS PETS Fall 2018
Pawducts with Purpose By Sam Ujvary

Companies that give back to our furry friends

Carrying products that give back is becoming a popular business model. But it’s so much more than just “good for business.” Selling these cause-related collections gives a purpose to customers’ purchases as well as sharing the altruistic sentiment with the makers and the consumers.

The two companies featured here — Chavez for Charity and Mud Pie — are two companies that embrace giving back as part of their corporate culture. One offers products whose various designs donate 25 percent of proceeds to respective represented charities; another whose owners make monetary donations as a whole. Both show just two of the ways people are trying to make the world a better place.

Mud Pie

Company mission: Mud Pie is a lifestyle brand that creates delightful gifts to inspire life’s sparkling moments. Our aim is to add laughter, inspiration and joy to everyday celebrations.
How do your products serve the mission? The Miller family supports no-kill shelters like Lifeline Animal Project, and as an organization, Mud Pie has donated to the Petco Foundation to provide help for animals in communities hit by natural disasters. The programs we support are through foundation donations.
Plans for the future: (We will have) lots more pet products – gift and décor specifically – coming for Spring 2019.
How can retailers get involved? Retailers can continue to support and carry Mud Pie products.

Chavez for Charity

Mark Chavez, owner
www.chavezforcharity.com

Julie Chavez’s mission for her bracelet collection was simple: contribute as best as possible to issues we’re facing in the world today. The answer to that, was a collection of bracelets. A simple idea that would appeal to just about anyone who appreciates a colorful accent piece, and anyone who wants to support a good cause.

Company mission: The founder, Julie Chavez, has a background in fashion jewelry and crafted the idea as well as our trademark phrase, Colors for Causes, as a way of giving back to those in need. Chavez for Charity is determined to make a positive, lasting impact on those in need.
How do your products serve the mission? 25 percent of our net profits are donated to our partner charities. We have 10 partner charities, as well as a program called The 11th Project, which allows retailers to support their own local charity with our 25-percent donation. For pets, we work with Best Friends Animal Society. We don’t have any plans (to expand to other pet charities) yet but we are always open to suggestions.
Plans for the future: Continuing to evolve our collections and raise awareness and donations for our wonderful partner charities.
How can retailers get involved? Retailers can get involved by ordering any of our collections!
