Benning shop stocks more than giftsBy Lily GordonLedger-Enquirer.com

Nestled between Wold Avenue and Dixie Road on Fort Benning sits a quaint gift shop.

From the outside, A Bit of Benning could easily be mistaken for just another sterile government building. Inside, however, visitors are greeted with warm smiles and a unique shopping atmosphere.

The Fort Benning Community Spouses’ Club opened the gift shop five years ago. All proceeds from A Bit of Benning go directly to the group’s board of directors who decide how and when to distribute the funds. Store manager Jennifer Burns said in the past the board has pooled the capital into scholarships and welfare for members of the Fort Benning community.

“As a customer, you get inexpensive prices on home décor and stuff like that, but then all of the profits stay in the community. We don’t make a profit. And we’re staffed by volunteers,” Burns said.

Anyone can shop at A Bit of Benning. Civilians don’t need a military identification card to buy the candles, cookbooks, decorative signs and Benning-themed gifts.
