GIFT SHOP Magazine announces successful completion of 2009 ‘Ultimate Makeover’

Hanover, Mass. – GIFT SHOP magazine is proud to announce that Mary Louise Van Der Wilden, owner of Le Papillon—Accessories, Clothing & Gifts in Rumson, NJ, is the recipient of its 2009 ‘Ultimate Makeover.’

Roberta King, territory manager for OneCoast, nominated Van Der Wilden for several reasons. “This store has been in business for many years, owned by Mary Louise and her husband.  When he passed away a few years back she rose to the occasion and with her strength, kept it going. It has so much potential but I felt it could use some enhancements to support the love Mary Louise has for her store and especially her customers in this beautiful town,” King said.

Le Papillon received $500 in merchandising supplies and the visual merchandising services of Paul Thompson, the vice president of creative at OneCoast. Thompson called the makeover an exciting challenge. This is the second consecutive year that Thompson has rendered his professional expertise to the makeover. This is GIFT SHOP’s third year doing the Ultimate Makeover and OneCoast’s third year sponsoring the event.

Van Der Wilden was happy to have a professional evaluate her merchandising with a new set of eyes. The makeover was executed in the end of April. Results will be published in the Fall ’09 issue of GIFT SHOP magazine.

OneCoast is the primary sponsor of the makeover. Jeremy Hirsch, VP of Marketing, OneCoast, said: “Retailers need to give their customers great reasons to visit their shops—particularly in today’s challenging economy. Terrific merchandising is one such way to keep customers coming back. OneCoast strives to assist its retail customers in improving their store presentation.”

“We love how GIFT SHOP magazine’s makeover pairs Paul Thompson, a design expert from OneCoast, with a deserving retailer.”

“GIFT SHOP Magazine will cover the ‘before’ and ‘after’ so that all readers can benefit from Paul’s expertise,” Hirsch added.

Patricia Norins, publisher of GIFT SHOP, said the makeover was a perfect fit with the magazine’s vision of being a complete resource for the gift store retailer. “We have always been dedicated to the business success of the gift retailer and this goes a long way in strengthening that mission. We are really delighted with the results,” Norins said. She added that trying economic times are exactly when retailers can afford to try something new and different that will drive much-needed traffic to their stores. Visual merchandising, Norins said, is a key component of a store’s success.
