Indulgences: Passion for writing finds voice in bookstore
Tracy Beltran was looking for a place to showcase the works of independent authors and publishers.
Thais Black was looking for a new career.
Together, they believe that they have found a winning combination.
They are the managing owners of Barnhill’s, a new book and wine store at 811 Burke St., near the corner of Burke and Fourth streets.
Beltran, an author and accountant, is the store manager. Black, a former paralegal, is the wine-shop manager.
“Considering the economy and that we’re kind of off the main streets, we’re doing really well,” Beltran said.
Barnhill’s sells new books, including best-sellers, and books by local and independent authors and publishers. Other offerings include gifts, North Carolina wines and work by local artists.
“We encourage people to go out and visit the wineries,” Black said.
The store has book-signings every weekend and wine tastings daily. Immigrant’s Daughter, a Celtic music group, practices in the store every third Wednesday.
