New shop piques curiosity and local support
South Knoxville, TN – South Knoxville resident Geoff Trowbridge is used to driving down Chapman Highway past vacant buildings like those previously occupied by Education Station and Active Pets. So in April when a new store called Downtown Curiosities gift shop opened up along this stretch at 6103 Chapman Highway, the interesting signage and cheerfully repurposed decor inspired him to stop and see what it was about.
Inside the small shop owned by Meleah McMahan is a selection of more than 80 bulk herbs she uses to mix up teas, bath salts and incenses. She also features vintage furniture, locally made jewelry and used books. Plus her own handmade creations, too, like wine glasses made from vintage candlestick holders and felted flower rings made from the wool off her pet goat Quinn.
“It’s a little bit quirky. It’s little bit funky, and I think she’s doing something really neat,” says Trowbridge.
Trowbridge wants to see fewer empty storefronts along Chapman Highway and is urging people to support local businesses like Downtown Curiosities.
“I think small, innovative businesses like this are the kinds of things on the south side of the river that should be supported and highlighted, so that more people can know about it and frequent there,” expressed Trowbridge.
