Edmond finds its ‘Scruples’By Courtney CrauthersEdmondSun.com

Edmond, OK — A new downtown business has “scruples” for all. Scruples of Edmond, 115 S. Broadway, a novelty gift and collectible store, opened Sept. 12 to the delight of downtown shoppers.

“You want that little gift for someone and it’s hard to find,” said Susan Hines, owner.

Her husband died seven years ago and she decided it was time to come out of retirement and open a gift store.

“My mother had a gift shop in Mississippi years ago and I loved it,” Hines said.

When she moved from Louisiana to Edmond four years ago, she couldn’t wait to do downtown shopping. It’s no surprise that she chose to rent a vacated space nestled among the historical shops along Broadway. Before she opened her store, she researched to see what the other downtown shops already offered.

“I tried to find things different than what they had so when people come to downtown Edmond they can have a unique experience,” Hines said.

Scruples offers a variety of items in a wide price range. For example, shoppers can buy Shannon crystal for under $50 a piece or Lalique crystal, which ranges from hundreds to thousands of dollars a piece.

After only a week of being open, customers already have dubbed Botanicals, a line of potpourri by Judy Havelka, as a favorite.

“One of my favorite things in the store is one of the least expensive,” Hines said.

These include coasters with collegiate and hobby designs that absorb drips and spills from drinks while they are in a car cup holder. The coasters cost $3.52 a piece.

Marge Washam, a consultant, said customers already have shown a lot of interest in holiday decor. Hines said the line is by Fitz and Floyd.

Scruples also offers Tiffany lamps, Italian linens, OU and OSU paraphernalia, tote and computer bags by Suburban Silk, leather desk sets, pottery and Sferra bedding and accessories.
