Sisters team up to offer Burkburnett the finer things
In August 2001, sisters Janey Roberts and Pam Baber opened Gabby’s, a gift store, in Burkburnett.
At the time, they said, retail traffic for such a store was lacking.
“All we had in Burkburnett was Wal-Mart,” Baber said.
“Burkburnett was in need of a place that you could get gifts that were wrapped. When we first started talking about opening a gift shop, we wanted people to be able to come in or call, get a nice gift, sacked or wrapped with bows, and be ready to be picked up or delivered,” Roberts said.
Even though they had such a clear idea of what they wanted to do, they didn’t start out in retail. Roberts had worked at a local bank for 14 years and raised a family. Baber had also raised her family and was staying busy as a housewife. But the women were ready for a change — and they had a vision. They filled a niche for fine gifts and décor in the area, and their business boomed. They even moved to a larger location three years ago.
“We are just a little family establishment, and we aim to please and make it worth the drive to Burkburnett,” Roberts said.
“Most people tell us that they are pleasantly surprised,” Baber said.
They feel if they apply the “Golden Rule” to their business, they can’t lose.
