Ballston Spa businesses look to prosper as seasons changeBy Paul PostSaratogian.com

Ballston Spa, NY — Like every small town, Ballston Spa is struggling against the tide of a downward spiraling economy.

The difference is that this village has undergone a revitalization in the past few years that business owners hope is strong enough to overcome current trends and lead a continued resurgence as summer draws near and conditions hopefully improve.

Throughout the village, entrepreneurs are investing in all kinds of operations, from eateries to antique shops.

“I’m sold on it enough to put another $100,000 across the street,” said Carolyn Frances, owner of 51 Front Street restaurant, which opened roughly a year ago.

This spring, she plans to open a bakery and bistro serving breakfast, lunch and dinner at 36 Front St.

“That’s how concerned I am about the economy and Ballston Spa,” she said. “I’m not scared. I think Ballston Spa is on the verge of being something great. It reminds me of what Saratoga was 25 years ago.

“People told me, ‘You’re crazy!’ … that I was out of my mind for starting a business in Ballston Spa. Everyone who told me not to do this, they were all wrong.”

Mark Lynett of Elliott Property Services LLC makes regular trips to New York City on business.

“When I tell them I live in Ballston Spa, they say, ‘Oh what a charming little town that is,’ ” he said. “I was born and grew up here in the late ’70s and early ’80s. So I’ve seen it go from what it was to what it is today. It’s come a long way.”

This weekend, hundreds of people turned out for the village’s annual winter festival featuring a variety of activities for people of all ages. In summer, things really come alive with a twice-a-week farmer’s market, Thursday night concerts in the park and a free outdoor film festival.
