Catching Fireflies

Located across the street from the popular Zingerman’s Deli, Catching Fireflies offers many Michigan-made products and items from Michigan artists.
Owner April McCrumb is one of those local artists who established the store in 2000 to help with her paper product business, A.I. Paper Design. Two years later, after the store began to do more than help pay for rent, McCrumb decided to open additional locations.
“We do not take loans to grow, but choose to expand when the profits from our business allow us to,” McCrumb said.
Catching Fireflies, named after a painting by Chris Roberts-Antieau purchased by McCrumb in 1999, has two other Michigan locations in Berkley and Rochester.
“Adding two additional locations in the last 14 years has definitely built strong brand recognition and expanded our customer base across the Detroit-Metro area,” McCrumb said.
In general, the product lines in all three stores are the same, but each has its differences.
“Some lines sell better than others in the different areas, so our managers reorder quantities according to their location’s needs,” McCrumb said. “In addition to our market finds, we also offer works from a variety of local artists and that does vary from store to store.”
