Crown Point — Liz Messing is rising from the ashes of her burned-out gardening store and gift shop and using Earth Day as an opportunity of renewal.

Messing reopens The Artful Garden, at 611 N. Indiana Avenue at 9:30 a.m. today.

“I’m really excited about opening tomorrow,” Messing said as she was getting ready on Wednesday. “Flowers are my favorite thing. We’ve been working really hard.”

Crown Point Fire Department officials determined the fire started in the gas stove of the former frame house, basically gutted the building, leaving Messing with two Dumpsters full of merchandise.

“People drive by and they don’t think anything is wrong with the building, but you go inside and it’s all black and the windows are cracked and the floor is buckled.”
