Despite recession, many pet-centered businesses in Lee report continued strengthBy Don ManleyTallahassee.com

Many pet owners in Lee County are still spending on their four-legged and feathered friends despite the hard economic times.

Some pet-related businesses have been hard-hit by the downturn, but others have seen revenues remain steady or even increase, and some are expanding.

The Dog Resort is about to move to a larger space that will provide more room for its cage-free boarding and day care services, and provide space for indoor training.

The south Fort Myers business also offers obedience training and grooming and also has a retail store.

Business there has consistently increased since it opened two years ago, said the owner, Gayle Gosnell.

“I’ve not had an up and down period,” Gosnell said. “I’m sure someday it will fluctuate, but not yet.”

However, she said she’s seen revenues decline in her retail store, which sells raw pet food, healthy foods and treats, gift items, cool-down vests and blankets. Sales are down sharply where the non-food items are concerned, Gosnell said.

In two weeks, the business will move from a roughly 3,000-square-foot space off Metro Parkway to a 7,745-square-foot spot in the Metro Centre Plaza, located across the street.

The building’s owner wouldn’t renew the lease at her current location. However Gosnell said the new location offers a number of pluses: space for more dogs and lower rent, which enable her to add another employee to her staff of six.

She attributed the business’ performance to its location on a roadway lined with business, including the Chico’s headquarters, the cage-free approach and the fact she’s open 24-7.
